Press Coverage
The Coal River Mountain Wind Rally was both a celebration of the potential for developing clean, renewable wind energy and good, green jobs on Coal River Mountain as a viable alternative to a proposed 6,450 acre Mountaintop Removal coal mining operation. The rally drew 150 people, two authors, and three state-wide television stations, and ended up being mentioned on the front page of the state's most widely read newspaper, the Charleston Gazette. The event had 5 speakers, including Lorelei Scarbro of Rock Creek, WV whose home is being threatened by MTR; Jesse Johnson, WV gubernatorial candidate; a member of the state electrical union; Danny Chiotos of the Student Environmental Action Coalition; Donna Branham of Mingo County, who is working to bring a small wind manufacturing plant to her local area; and Rory McIlmoil, coordinator for the wind campaign. There was also a procession of WV activists and Coal River community members who lined up to speak one at a time, reading statements by community members in support of the wind farm over dangerous and destructive strip-mining. As a bonus, Jim Pitrolo, the Legislative Director for Governor Joe Manchin, came out to accept the Coal River Wind petition, which had generated over 9,300 signatures in about two months. At the end, about 40 of us gathered together in front of the Capitol, and with green hard hats on declared in one solid voice, "We Want Green Jobs Now!!" Thank you Green for All for supporting our campaign.
