We had a turnout of around 60 people throughout the day. They went on tours of the green engineered home given by the home owner who is also the architect. A staff member of CCAN also gave tours. At 2:00 pm our speakers spoke and covered such things as how energy efficiency and clean energy could create thousands of jobs across the state and millions in the country. T.D. Mitchell spoke about a green jobs training program that was just started in Alexandria called Job Link. They covered their personal journey in exploring energy efficiency and green building. The president of the Virginia Sustainable Building Network Annette Osso talked about the cooperation that can be made between government programs and private businesses to move VA to a clean economy as well as creating jobs. State senator Chap Peterson told the story of what started his motivation towards strong environmental policies after he heard Mike Tidwell speak. Alexandria city council member Rob Krupicka explained how and why he built his green engineered home a few years ago and how he became a champion of green building and green jobs. Each talked about what the local government can do to start the green economy in VA. We did photo petitions with attendees holding signs directed toward a member or candidate for congress in the area. Some held signs that said let’s build the new economy. We took a group picture at the end. Everyone had a great time and signed the green jobs now pledge.
