In Las Vegas, Democracia U.S.A., 1Sky Nevada, Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, and the Nevada Conservation League partnered together to bring a Green Jobs Now Forum, a panel-style discussion of green jobs and the green economy with guest speakers local elected officials, environmental business owners, and local green leadership to the local and diverse community.
The event in Las Vegas was a success. The main purpose of the event was to show that there is interest in green jobs in the Latino community, a rapidly growing segment of our community that have not always been included in our education about environmental issues. The discussion focused on job creation and what this means for Nevada’s economy. Attendees supported the event by signing 24 petitions in support of Green Jobs Now and the Clean Energy Corps in the U.S. We also gave away energy efficient light bulbs and other green give-aways.
This event was part of Democracia U.S.A.'s Latinos Go Green campaign to focus on environmental voter education and community organizing focusing on Hispanics through days of action on or near September 27, 2008 in Las Vegas, Miami, and Philadelphia. Together with the national movement Green Jobs Now, the project helped Latinos learn about the potential of green jobs and the green economy as well as have an understand environmental concerns relevant to Latinos and their quality of life.
