The first of a two part event convened at the Shelby Farms Park entrance to the Greater Memphis Greenline walk/bike trail being developed along an abandoned railroad track. Included at this event was an explanation of the development of Shelby Farms Park into the largest urban park 4 times the size of Central Park in New York. The second part convened at the Highpoint Terrace entrance to the GMG. The GMG will ultimately extend 13 miles from the Mississippi river through several neighborhoods into Shelby Farms Park and on to the suburbs. Many Green Jobs will be created as the trail is prepared to include small parks, playgrounds, refreshment and rental business, etc.
Members of Greater Memphis Greenline, an initiative to convert 13 miles of former CSX railroad right-of-way into an a multi-purpose recreational trail through the heart of Memphis, held a "Show and Tell" with citizens at two locations along the proposed trail to promote the effort.
Green jobs would be created with the Greenline's construction, maintenance, and use. The trail would provide walking, hiking, bicycling, birding, exercise and educational opportunities along its path. It would reduce carbon emissions by increasing non-motorized traffic and transportation from Midtown Memphis to an area east of Shelby Farms Park, the nation's largest urban park (4500 acres!.
The Greenline's advantages include:
* PROPERTY VALUES RISE - Values rise up to ¼ to ½ mile on both sides of the trail.
* SMALL BUSINESS FLOURISHES - People tend to shop closer to home. New small businesses start up as well.
* TOURISM IS STIMULATED - Bikers and hikers from across the region come to use the new trails.
* HEALTH IMPROVES- People get healthier and medical bills go down.
* ENVIRONOMICS - Trees will add an additional $6,000,000 per year in economic value
* CRIME at worst DOES NOT RISE - and often goes down as more people are out and about.
