it was good to clean the island we pikedup a lot of plastic garbage out but it needs to something continious. There is a lot of plastic and stuff out there.
The guys that conducted the event weren't too informative about the event main idea.
Fun-filled beach clean up day!
Volunteers rode out in a boat to Pelican Harbor Island, and cleaned our beautiful bay and beache.
Family-friendly, and 30 volunteers participated.
We took a boat out to Pelican Island, in the middle of the Biscayne Bay Intercostal waterway, under a very comfortable and cool cloud cover (spared from the usually wilting September-Sun-in-Miami heat) and spent an hour or two gathering trash and debris to dispose of off the island...I was much heartened to see how many (between two and three dozen) came out to give of their time and effort, especially the twenty somethings, and a Frenchman named Michael visiting from France...the loveliest reward being a leisurely tour of the surrounding waters after our work, glimpsing pelicans and other graceful native birds.
The only disappointment was that the organizer of the event chose not to distribute a petition, stating that he had been advised against it by his supervisors (?), as that had been part of my motivation and inspiration, wanting to send a message to the candidates that taking care of our natural environment is a large concern of this voter. He said he believed that the names of the participants that showed would somehow end up on the petition? Didn't sound very plausible to me, but what more could I do or say but ask, as I did, where the petition was?
Anyway, I did enjoy getting out and making a contribution, however small, to the beauty of my marine community. Thank you for the opportunity to be of service.
