We are a group of 21 students from Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, currently on a semester long field-program traveling around the Western United States and studying politics, ecology, and writing in this region. Though we were camping out on remote public land in Utah to work on ecology, we had a great discussion about the role of green jobs in the future of the West! After studying renewable energy, affordable housing, and green economies and municipalities in Colorado the week before, we had a lot of positive examples to talk about. Many rural economies are supported or have suffered from the boom and bust oil and gas economy, and these poor towns need stable job creation to be pulled out of poverty. There is great possibility for small towns and public land in the West to become the renewable energy providing areas of the country!
